Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American musician and rapper. Her work as Queen Latifah in television, film and music has won many accolades. This includes a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. They were both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked at Irvington High School. Her father and mother split after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was a student at the Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated through the Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and compassionate in Arabic was bestowed to her by her cousin when she was only eight. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. She sang the song home from the show The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created a demo of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and signed Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
