Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson, a jazz performer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. She was married to Olden Wilson, an ironworker who had worked for a long time as housekeeper. Nancy was one of six children. The music passion of her father and his collection of records at home were a huge influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. Nancy knew that she was going to be a singer at the age of 4 years old. She developed her talent by singing in the choir at church. When she won a talent contest on television when she was 15 years old, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. The same year, Nancy started to work at nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for one term, Nancy went on to become an experienced performer. Her first album was with the Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, which she sang with between 1956 and 1958. Nancy recorded her first record with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball advised her to move in New York and go to The Big Town to further her singing career. Within a short time she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company was able to hear her perform and promptly took her on. His agent signed her with Capitol in the year 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess whom I am seeing in the present. Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. With the help of Adderley's influence the singer-songwriter shifted her focus away her focus from R&B into jazz. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to the top and she had her breakout hit Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The singer was offered a position at the New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's top nightclub.
