Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
The jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award-winner was born on February 20 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as domestic helper. Nancy Wilson was the only born child at the age of 6. Nancy's father was an avid fan of music and loved to play records with his children at home. This was a major influence upon her growing up. By the age of four, Nancy was aware that she would like to become an artist. She developed her musical talent through participating in choirs of the church. In high school when she started appearing often on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. She began working in nightclubs at the same age. Nancy, then 17, had graduated high school, and then matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to become a singer. In 1956 she made her debut album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant between 1956 and 1958. Nancy released her debut recording through Dot Records during the time she spent with this group. Cannonball Aderley suggested she make the move in New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959 Nancy made the move in The Big Town. In less than a month she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. He signed a contract signing her with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she debuted that year by releasing the single. Guess Who I Saw today Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Initially focusing on blues and rhythm under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B and began to embrace jazz and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to propel her into the spotlight and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. The song led to a performance at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she quickly became a legend.
