Hitchcock plays with his timing in The Birds. He introduces the characters Daniels Brenner in the film long before any action. This heightens the suspense. The film has memorable supporting roles performed by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former girlfriend Annie. The screenplay was written by popular writer Evan Hunter, better known as his name, Ed McBain, from a novella by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock's use of electronic sounds as opposed to a music score proved to be extremely effective. Hitchcock used research to prepare for his film about an eerie real-life assault of Shearwaters with a haze of smoke in Capitola (California) in the year 1961. It was thought that poisoning with diatoms caused an extreme aggression in the birds after they ate anchovies.
